The 2022 Sundance Film Festival is underway. While this year’s event is being streamed online, meaning that there is less of a buzz on the red carpet than usual, the quality of the nominees is as high as ever, so competition is fierce.

Sofy.tv, is the world’s premiere short film-focused video-on-demand entertainment platform. It was launched back in 2018 during The Cannes Film Festival.

As a distribution outlet for short movies, Sofy.tv has been a regular at many international film festivals ever since. Indeed, the company’s CEO, Sami Arpa, has given many presentations on the platform and its sister company, Largo.ai, at festivals including the San Sebastian Film Festival and The Cannes Film Festival.

As a distributor, Sofy.tv aims to reward short filmmakers financially so that they can generate much-needed new funds for their next projects. The platform has 1,000s of shorts in its catalog, many of which are entirely exclusive to Sofy.tv and cannot be found anywhere else.

Many of Sofy.tv’s shorts are award-winning and have premiered at major film festivals including Sundance, Cannes Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival had no less than 4 Sofy.tv nominated shorts, something which brings great pride to not just the filmmakers themselves but everyone working hard behind the scenes at Sofy.tv too.

We wish them the best of luck.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of the past Sofy.tv available short film nominees which won awards at the Sundance Film Festival.

Figura

Directed by Katarzyna Gondek

Poland, 2015

8 min – Documentary, Experimental

This intriguing experimental short is filmed in a documentary style and follows the movement of a large statue as it is moved into a small town in the middle of nowhere. Whether it is a saint, the Pope, or Jesus Christ himself is unclear, but the viewer is brought on a journey that follows the head of the statue making its way on a truck through various towns and villages on its way to its final destination on top of a hill next to a carnival.

With no dialogue, the viewer is invited to make up their own mind as to the story behind this statue and who it represents. The film is an 8-minute wonder that well deserved its win at the Sundance Film Festival 2018.

Deer Boy – 2017

Directed by Katarzyna Gondek

Poland, 2017

15 min – Fantasy

Deer Boy is a wonderfully crafted fantasy tale of a boy who is born with deer antlers. Despite his apparent empathy with the deer in the wilderness around him, the boy follows his father’s example of trying to cut away his antlers in an effort to align himself with humans.

His father, a hunter, brings him on his hunts in an effort to teach him how to hunt and kill deer. Despite being shocked by the hunt, which results in a dead deer, the boy attempts to hunt for himself and kills a deer. Rather than bringing him closer to humans, it serves to isolate him even more.

Deer Boy managed to several awards and scored a very impressive Sofy.tv user feedback rating of 8.2. It scooped an award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is a must watch short if you have not already seen it.
