1. A Room with a View

A Room with a View is a British drama movie that was based on the novel by E.M. Forster.  The story is about a young English woman named Lucy Honeychurch who does on holiday to Italy with her older cousin.

During the trip, she meets a charming, free-spirited handsome man named George Emerson.  She finds herself intrigued by George.  She feels free and happy in his company, something she has not felt for a long time.

However, she has already committed to settle down with Cecil Vyse, a wealthy man, back in London. After George unexpectedly reappears in her life, a conflict begins.

2. A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities is a movie based on the novel by Charles Dickens.  It is a story of struggle, love, friendship, and selflessness.

Lucie Manette is a beautiful young woman is forced to care for her elderly father.  Her father in an ex-convict who spent 18 years jailed in Bastille.  One day, Lucie meets Charles Darnay, and they fall in love.

Charles Darnay is an aristocrat but was framed for treason by his Uncle, the Marquis de St. Evremonde.   Charles was put in trial and saved by a cynical lawyer, Sydney Carton.  Lucie thanks Sydney for saving her lover Charles.  Sydney fall in love with Lucie but remains her friend as Lucie and Charles get married.

Charles gets captured by his Uncle and is again sent to prison.  When Sydney hears the news, he goes to comfort Lucie and eventually decides to take Charles’s place in prison.  After a successful switch, Charles goes home to Lucie while Sydney was sentenced to death by guillotine.  This is a touching story about the power of love to overcome selfishness.

3. The Abduction Club

Set in the 18th century, The Abduction Club is a romantic comedy-drama film.  The main characters are Garrett Byrne and James Strang.  These two young men are members of the infamous group named The Abduction Club.

The club’s main agenda is to abduct and to marry a wealthy heiress.  Garrett and James need to secure their future finances, so they look for an eligible heiress.  They kidnapped the Kennedy sisters, but they were not ready for the reaction that the girls have towards them.

4. The Age of Innocence

The Age of Innocence is a story of love, loyalty, desire, and temptation.   Newland Archer is a lawyer who is engaged to a respectable young woman named May.  May is a typical young lady and is full of innocence.

But everything begins to change when May’s cousin, Countess Ellen, goes home to New York. Her marriage has been disastrous.  Society criticized her for being an independent and outspoken lady.

As Newland Archer get to know the Countess, he falls in love with her and begins to have doubts about his feelings for his fiancée, May.  He is tempted to run away with Ellen, but instead, returns to May and marries her.

They have a successful marriage and had three children.  However, May dies of pneumonia and Archer is left in mourning.  Ted, their son, asks Archer to visit Ellen in Paris because he finds out about the affair between his father and his aunt.  In Paris, Archer lets Ted visit Ellen alone as he sits outside the apartment. Together they recollect their time together.

5. Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace movie is a biographical drama movie.  It is about the life of William Wilberforce who advocates the abolition of the slave trade.

William Wilberforce was a member of the Parliament in 1782.  He experienced enlightenment and wanted to leave politics to serve God by studying theology.  However, his friends persuaded him to stay in the Parliament and fight for the rights of African slaves.

For years, he struggled to get the necessary votes to abolish slavery. Time and time again he ends fighting a lost battle.  After almost giving up, but meets his future wife and started fighting for his cause again with renewed vigor. Eventually, he wins his lifetime cause, and the trade in slaves is abolished.

6. Knight’s Tale

A Knight’s Tale is a romantic-comedy film that will make you laugh and cry at the same time.

It is a story of a young squire, William Thatcher, who finds himself caught in the middle of two noblemen in a jousting competition.  He desires to make a fortune, so he and his friends fake his identity as a Knight so he can join the contest.

Surprisingly, he wins every joust he enters.  He meets a noblewoman named Jocelyn, and falls in love with her.  His opponent in the jousting competition Count Adhemar, wants Jocelyn for himself as well.

As the events unfold, Count Adhemar discovered the truth about William’s true identity.   He decides to get him eliminated from the competition. However, William was saved by the Prince and manages to win not just the competition but Jocelyn’s heart as well.

7. Atonement

Atonement is a romantic drama film.  It is the story of two lovers that were separated from each other because of a tragic even in their childhood.

It all started with Briony, a 13-year-old girl who is an aspiring writer.  She has a crush on Robbie, who is in love with Cecilia, Briony’s older sister.  Robbie and Cecilia love each very much.

After Briony sees her cousin, Lola, having sex with a man, she forces her to make a statement to the police saying that Robbie raped her.   The police arrested Robbie and he is taken away. What follows is a journey for regret as Lola tries to come to terms with what she has done.

8. Becoming Jane

Becoming Jane is romantic film that tells the story of a woman named Jane Austen, an aspiring writer.  She meets Tom, a lawyer, and they fight each other. Later on, they manage to reverse their feelings and fall madly in love with each other.

They have a romantic relationship and plan on getting married.  Tom’s family is against the marriage because Tom is the breadwinner of his family.  They cannot afford to lose Tom to a poor woman.

Tom goes to Jane and asked her to elope with him.  Jane decides to go with him but, but after she learns about Tom’s financial status, she forced Tom to go back home.  She can’t bear watching how his family will be forced into poverty without him.

At the end of the story, both of them became successful, and manage to live happily ever after.

9. Belle

Belle is a story about an orphan named Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay.  She is the daughter of an enslaved African woman and a British navy merchantman.   Her mother dies, so her father takes her to her uncle William Murray, the Lord Chief Justice. William and his wife Elizabeth raise Dido as a noblewoman along with her cousin, Elizabeth Murray.

Dido sometimes feels small as she is part of an enslaved slave people.  After her father dies and leaves her an enormous inheritance, she meets a man named John who works with her uncle William.  They fall in love, but quickly encounter problems because of Dido’s African ancestry.

10. Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a story of a girl who has never fallen in love. She was an orphan and abused by her cruel aunt and cousins.  She works as a governess at Thornfield Hall when she meets Mr. Rochester, the master of the Thornfield Hall, and they fall in love.

However, it isn’t long until she learns about his dark secrets and runs away.
