No matter whether you are an independent film director or a big-budget action movie producer, the huge advantages that AI-assisted moviemaking tools offer are simply too great to ignore.
From in-depth script analysis to accurate gross earning predictions by geographical region, the power of this technology has already made companies like Amazon and Netflix. Thanks to its increasing adoption by smaller medium to low budget production companies, it is now helping all parts of the movie business too.
Chances are that if you are reading this you are a movie industry professional who has decided to unlock the power of big data analytics AI systems to get accurate insights into how moviegoers will react to your project
In this article, we will cover how you can go about setting up and making your first steps into data-assisted moviemaking.
What is Largo.ai and AI-assisted moviemaking?
Largo.ai is an artificial intelligence platform that provides a range of movie-assist tools.
AI-assisted moviemaking involves utilizing these movie-assist tools in order to gain valuable new perspectives from the insights that they provide.
How does this work? Well, the simple answer is that sophisticated AI systems are developed by data scientists before being painstakingly trained to allow them to make accurate predictions regarding how audiences will react to the script or film in question.
Can AI really make accurate predictions about movies?
Yes. The current systems are already achieving results in the mid-80 percent when it comes to certain predictions such as expected movie gross. It is for this reason that companies such as Sony Entertainment have already engaged the services of AI-assisted moviemaking companies.
How to use Largo.ai?
The first step towards unlocking the power of Largo is to get yourself a subscription to the platform’s SaaS offering.
Head to the Largo.ai homepage where you can sign up or request a demo, should you want to try out the platform a little before you commit.
Once you have your subscription, you will now have full access to the platform and its tools. At this stage, you will notice that you have a direct chat channel to a Largo.ai specialist. They will be on hand to help you at any time and to ensure that you understand how to use each of the tools and to interpret the results properly.
Just in case you are one of those people who likes to figure out things for yourself without the help of your Largo.ai specialist, here is the process:
Submit your project
It is important to note that Largo.ai is able to analyze your project during any stage of the production, i.e. preproduction (script phase), production (filming), or post-production (editing or completed version).
Despite the difference between a script and a finished film, Largo.ai can undertake an analysis and provide accurate data-derived insights at any time.
Indeed, feedback provided by movie producers indicates just how important they found these insights throughout each stage of the production. Their comments highlight that no matter which stage Largo.AI insights were requested, the producers were able to get a much better feel for how audiences would likely interpret the project, thereby allowing them a better perspective on the project.
Their feedback also indicated that while producers are less likely to enact big changes during the production and post-production phases when compared to the script phase, they would likely find themselves making lots more small-scale alterations. Once again, AI-assisted moviemaking is extremely helpful here.
To submit your project in order to allow Largo.ai to analyze it, users need to upload the script and any clips or the full movie if it is available.
Click the ‘New Analysis’ button and you will be asked to enter a range of information regarding your production including director, genre, country, etc. Try to give as accurate as possible information as this will help Largo.ai with the accuracy of its analysis.
Once you have done this, you will be able given an option to upload your script and any movie footage. Select the appropriate files and click ‘upload’.
Now it is time to sit back and let Largo.ai do all the hard work.
Largo.ai’s Tools
You will receive a notification when the analysis is complete.
In your Largo.ai SaaS account, the first thing you will notice is a new tab with the current stage of production written on it, i.e. Preproduction, Post-production, etc. Also included in the analysis number, i.e. ‘Post Production -1’.
Under this tab, you will see several categories relating to various aspects of your production. These tabs represent the main categories of tools offered by Largo.ai, i.e. character analysis, genre recipe, age suitability, etc.
Insights are most frequently provided in the form of graphs and interactive charts that are designed to provide the clearest possible readouts of the data possible.
We will cover how to interpret Largo.ai results in the next article as this must be covered in-depth.
However, users will notice that the results often take the form of breakdowns that include the relevant proportions of certain analyzed criteria. So, for example, the genre recipe readout includes extrapolated patterns relating to the proportion of each genre represented throughout the film.
Here is an example below. If you wish to learn how to read these results accurately read the next article in this series.
The relative proportions, and indeed the genres that have been identified, allow Largo.AI users to see how audiences will identify the overall genre recipe of their project. Since this feature is interactive (users can zoom in and out to enhance certain segments/scenes), it allows filmmakers to delve much deeper to see the results in much more detail.
In the case of other tools such as ‘Character Analysis’ and its ‘Most suitable actor’ suggestion feature, Largo.ai highlights the results by providing percentage data. So, for example, in the case of the most suitable actors to play the Joker character, it provided the following insights for the top three actors:
Joaquin Phoenix – 90.5%
Marc Menchaca – 92.4%
The tool then provides additional data regarding the character traits that is has linked each actor with the role of the Joker in order to provide in-depth insights to filmmakers.
New Version Analysis
One of the great strengths of AI analysis is that any new analyses is quick and painless. This means that filmmakers can use AI-assisted filmmaking to analyze and assess even the smallest changes to their projects.
Filmmakers simply need to make the desired changes to the script and any video media and upload the new versions to Largo.
To do this, simply click on the ‘New Analysis’ tab that can be found under the project analysis tabs. All that is required is to repeat the process outlined above when uploading the first version of the project for analysis.
Once this is complete, Largo.ai will undertake a speedy new analysis and inform you once the results are in.
Empowering Filmmakers to Make Better Films
The name of the game when it comes to AI-assisted moviemaking platforms is to provide filmmakers with the tools that they need to make better films.
As such, they are designed to enlighten filmmakers by providing invaluable new perspectives that they might have overlooked. As we have seen in this article, the results still require human interpretation, which is what we will cover in the next article.
